NLP Mastering Communication and Persuasion

The importance of effective communication cannot be overemphasised. Be it in business, politics or every day relationship, effective communication sand persuasion are skills that if mastered can single you out for greatness. In politics for instance, your ability to convince the electorate to vote you is a strong indication of a good communication and persuasion skill. To be truly great, you have to have a good self-confidence, communicate well and have the ability to influence people’s decision by persuading them. There are NLP techniques that teaches you how to do this. Hence, with NLP, you can master your communication and persuade more easily.

This is also very important in the sales world. With the stiff competition in that hemisphere, only good communication and persuasion can make the difference.

It might interest you to know that NLP was originally developed for agents such as business men and women to communicate and persuade. Thus, for you to be a successful business or influential person, communication and persuasion is a very vital tool which is indeed indispensable. Generally, it entails choosing your words carefully, knowing how to speak with gestures in a non-verbal manner and so on. Communication is more than the vocal sound we make, the gestures we make, the tones we use and languages we speak also sums up our communication.

Good communicators and writers would normally agree that even though a single word may have several synonyms, certain words are just better fitting for certain scenarios. The same thing goes for power words. These are words which are intentionally used to evolve certain kind of feelings on the listener. They are also referred to as magic words. For instance, to ’conjure’ positive emotions in a listener, words like happy, joy, believe and success are good choices of words. To ‘conjure’ curiosity try words like secret, think, truth and imagine. For instance, if you say ‘Can I tell you a secret?’, you have indirectly invoked a sense of curiosity in the person being spoken to. At this point, he is interested in what you want to say. Such is the power of language.

Active Listening

The first thing to put in place before you can be really good at communicating, you have to learn how to be an active listener. An active listener just not just listen with his ears; he listens with his eyes. He notices the tone, choice of words and the gestures of the person he is listening to. This way he picks up even the subtlest of messages and is better prepared to communicate back. He uses the tone of voice and word choices of his speaker so as to create an enabling environment for his speaker. This encourages further communication. This ensures rapport, friendship and relationships.

NLP techniques for persuasion

Appeal to the identity of your speaker:  you should try as much as possible to be the person you feel that your listener wants you to be. Who you are and how you see yourself is a vital influence tool, perhaps the most important one. Influence them positively and show them the best of you.

Invoke emotions: Positive emotions like hope, love, anticipation and fun are necessary in your attempt to persuade. Negative emotions like disgust, loneliness and anger can as well spur people into action.

Embedded commands: For instance, if I say, “Let’s go to the market” it is more difficult to resist than when I say “Do you want us to go to the market?”. Although it is politer to say the latter but it is an essential way to persuade.

Donald Trump has been rumoured to apply the persuasion techniques of NLP in his political and business career thus far and we can see how successful it has proved to be for him. With proper study and practice, you too can turn out to be a master communicator and persuader through the powers of NLP. Overtime, it will become part of your communication.
